The Inca Trail and its secrets

This time we will learn the most interesting secrets and tips about the Inca Trail, one of the most famous and exciting trekking routes in the world and everything we need to know about this incredible experience that takes us to the majestic Machu Picchu.
What was the Inca Trail?
The Inca Trail, known in Quechua as Qhapaq Ñan, was a network of roads built by the Incas to connect their cities and ceremonial centers throughout the vast territory of the ancient Inca Empire of Tahuantinsuyo. This meticulous, intricate and beautifully designed trail system stretched for more than 60,000 kilometers along the Andes and played a fundamental role in the integration and expansion of the Inca empire, given its geographic extension, connecting locations as distant as Quito, Cusco and Tucumán, the Spanish conquistadors used it during the 16th century to transit through Peru, Bolivia, Chile and the Argentinean Andean pampas, this backbone can be compared, in terms of dimensions, to the Silk Road or the Great Wall of China.
In 2014, through a joint initiative of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, Unesco declared the Capac Ñan a World Heritage Site, recognizing its historical and cultural importance, the most famous stretch of this immense road being the now known Inca Trail, which leads to Machu Picchu, the legendary lost citadel of the Incas, which remains a must-see destination for travelers from all over the world.

What part of the Inca Trail is being traveled today?
Today, hikers have the opportunity to hike a portion of the Inca Trail that extends approximately 43 kilometers from kilometer 82 – Piscacucho, of the Cusco-Machu Picchu rail route to the Sun Gate or Intu Punku being the main entrance to Machu Picchu. This section of the route offers breathtaking views of the Andean landscapes, as well as the opportunity to explore a number of impressive Inca archaeological sites, including Llactapata, Huayllabamba, Pacaymayu, Runcuracay and Wiñay Wayna. The trek culminates with the exciting arrival at Machu Picchu at sunrise, a truly unforgettable experience that transports us to the heart of the ancient Inca empire.
Proper preparation for the Inca Trail trek requires a bit of planning and care to avoid health problems along the route, but I assure you that every effort will be worth it. The first thing to do is to make sure you are in good physical condition, as the trek can be challenging, especially due to the altitude, which is why it is recommended to spend a few days acclimatizing in Cusco before starting the trek to avoid altitude-related health problems while doing activities in the Sacred Valley and Cusco. In addition, it is important to bring adequate clothing and equipment, including trekking shoes, warm and waterproof clothing, as well as enough water and snacks for the trek. Food prior to the start of the trek will be very important and also the most important thing to reserve your permit in advance, as the number of visitors allowed on the Inca Trail is limited and usually runs out quickly, especially during the high season, we recommend having at least 4 months to be able to plan the details of the trip and the paid income to the Inca Trail.
It is very important to mention that our staff from the guide, assistants, cooks and porters, are duly certified to attend any health or physical contingency on route. Our itinerary includes snacks, fruits, water, balanced meals according to the nutritional requirements of the traveler and a first aid kit approved by the Ministry of Culture and SERNANP (Regulatory Entity of Protected Natural Areas).
