The Legacy of Exploration: A Family’s Journey to Rediscover the Inca Trail
Imagine a time when the legendary paths of the Incas lay hidden under the dense canopy of the Andean jungle, their secrets buried beneath centuries of untamed wilderness. It was the early 1960´s, and a team of passionate explorers, driven by a desire to uncover the mysteries of the Inca civilization, set out on a bold expedition. Among them were two remarkable figures: Dr. Constantino Zuñiga Vargas, a respected geographer, and Dr. Marcial Del Aguila Lapiz, a dedicated health doctor. These men, were part of a pioneering group assembled by the renowned Dr. Victor Angles Vargas, as chronicled in his book Machu Picchu, Enigmatic Inca City (1972).
This was no ordinary exploration. The mission was to study and map a forgotten path—an Inca trail that was only partially known, beginning at the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu and stretching towards Ollantaytambo. This section of the trail, now celebrated as the famous “Inca Trail,” had never been fully explored or documented. Their journey would change that, linking the breathtaking archaeological citadel of Machu Picchu with the heart of Ollantaytambo, starting from kilometer 88—a stretch that, at that time the first hike took 10 days from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu and even today, challenges and captivates hikers from around the world with the 4 days and 3 camp nights.
Dr. Constantino Zuñiga Vargas brought his expertise in geography to the forefront, meticulously studying the terrain and mapping the route with precision. His knowledge helped the team navigate the rugged landscapes, ensuring they could trace the ancient steps of the Incas. Dr. Marcial Del Aguila Lapiz, on the other hand, provided essential medical support, safeguarding the health of the team as they ventured through the high altitudes and unpredictable climates of the Andes.
Together, these explorers braved the unknown, guided by their deep connection to the land and a shared vision of bringing the hidden wonders of the Inca Trail to light. They trekked through dense forests, crossed rushing rivers, and scaled steep mountain passes. Each step they took was a tribute to the ancient travelers who had once used this path, and their efforts paved the way for future generations to experience the journey from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu by foot.
Our CEO & FOUNDER , José Ignacio Del Aguila Zuñiga carries the legacy of these trailblazers in his blood. His grandfathers’ pioneering spirits and contributions to this groundbreaking expedition are a proud chapter in his family’s history. The trail that many now know and love as the “Inca Trail” owes much to the determination and expertise of Dr. Zuñiga Vargas and Dr. Del Aguila Lapiz, who, along with their colleagues, embarked on what could be called the first true expedition of this now world-renowned path.
Thanks to their courage and vision, the Inca Trail has become more than just a route; it’s a journey through time, a chance to walk in the footsteps of an ancient civilization. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of exploration and the profound connection between the past and the present. As thousands of travelers each year take to this iconic trail, they follow in the footsteps of these original explorers, uncovering the beauty and mystery of the Andes just as José Ignacio’s grandfathers did over half a century ago.
